We discovered Maison Pechavy on a sourcing trip to Paris and immediately understood why they've captured the attention of the most discerning interiors world. Founded in 2019 in the Dordogne by Carine Pechavy — a tribute to her family's century-old wood trading heritage and to the French art of living — every candle is made by the Ciergerie des Prémontrés, the last candle factory in Provence and holder of the prestigious "Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant" (Living Heritage Company) label. The fine candles are hand-dipped by wax craftsmen using the ancestral "à la plongée" method, where cotton wicks on wooden frames are plunged repeatedly into warm wax and the color pigments scattered by hand into the melted wax — producing candles that are subtler, more alive, and more beautiful than anything a machine can make.
Where the fine candles are delicate and tapered, the Scandinavian Pillar is substantial — made from 100% stearin, a plant-based wax derived from vegetable fats that burns cleaner, longer, and more evenly than paraffin. Odourless and non-dripping, it is equally at home standing alone on a mantelpiece, grouped in a fireplace, or set inside a glass hurricane for an outdoor summer dinner.
