Named for the ancient craft of wood carving, Whittle's irregular stripes and unstudied geometric shapes recall the subtle interplay of angles, planes, and notches in hand-carved wood. The entire repeat is drawn by hand — the original broken lines of pencil on paper still visible in the finished pattern. Seeing this design being gathered in the Fermoie workshop made it immediately clear why they instinctively chose it as one of the first patterns to launch in lampshade form. It ripples beautifully when lit.
